this I must have! There's a Mac version coming out in 2009. Can't wait. This is exactly the 3d software I have been dreaming about (literally, last night, that's the reason I started googling).
The good stuff comes from autodesk (which has finally changed it's direction and starts making brilliant software for the mac at last). The name is MudBox.
It looks like good visualizers and illustrators, sculptors and architects finally have a change to make great 3d work without having to be insanely geeky and into war-fetish or science fiction kitsch.

A friend of mine just had a one week workshop in London and told me about a presentation of a system called korskakow (what's in a name). So called generative film editing software. Extremly interesting.
I found a reference to it on a blog that looks at least as interesting for this blog (which hasn't been refreshed all that much).

David Dessens' work. Experiments with software called vvvv (not for the mac, not that I'd know what to do with it :). These images look very organically which I like. There is what seems to be a paper texture in all the parts. Nice.

This site is one of my favourites. It is a hub for designers, engineers, programmers who are involved in code generated art and design. There are some strinkingly beautiful projects. This site is a window to one of the most fascinating and innovative developments in graphic design, illustration, engineering and information graphics.
Take this example (which the site in its turn picked from the weblog 30gms)
These are images of the geological composition of the surface of the moon. Don't ask me what it is exactly that is represented here. I just look at the images and see beautiful complex, compositions, rendered in fantastic psychedelic colors.
Erik Natzke who I mentioned in the previous post is a main contributor (founder?). The links from and to this site are so many, that it will take a good deal of time to follow them up. Like I said: I think this site is the perfect start for a journey into the beautiful (brave new) world of code, art, design and imagery.

What can you do with New York City's newest and largest
blank canvas, a 120 by 12 foot video wall at IAC's new world headquarters designed
by Frank Gehry. Excited by the idea, we developed a one-semester course, Big Screens,
to take up the challenge and provide students with this unique opportunity to experiment,
play and wrestle with the demands of this new platform.

The projects on display are made with Processing using the
Most Pixels Ever library. They were developed over

I just found something amazing.
On the site of Media.org, which is an outstanding collective that produces very important and relevant websites and online initiatives, I found a link to Public Resource. At first this looks like a simple and strange site.
However, when you click on one of the logo's you find an open letter to a government institutions.
The letter(s) deals with the right a culturual and public institution had of keeping information from the public (which is in essence the funder of the institution).
Here's a fragment:

We write to you today on the subject of SmithsonianImages.SI.Edu, a government ecommerce site built on a repository of 6,288 images of national significance. The site is breathtaking in scope, with imagery ranging from the historic cyanotypes of Edward Muybridge to historic photos from aviation, natural history, and many other fields. If the Smithsonian Institution is our attic, these photos are our collective scrapbook.
However, the web site imposes draconian limits on the use of this imagery. The site includes a copyright notice that to the layman would certainly discourage any use of the imagery. While personal, non-commercial use is purportedly allowed, it requires a half-dozen clicks before the user is allowed to download a low-resolution, watermarked image. An image without the watermark and at sufficient resolution to be useful requires a hefty fee, manual approval by the Smithsonian staff, and the resulting invoice specifically prohibits any further use without permission."

The result of this is:

"Because the overwhelming majority of the images in SmithsonianImages.SI.Edu appear to be public domain, and because the draconian notices on the site have a dramatic chilling effect on use of these historic images and national symbols, we have performed several actions that we hope will allow others to examine the public domain status:

We downloaded all 6,288 images, scraped the metadata from the html pages, and embedded the metadata in the .jpg headers. These images are low-resolution and contain a watermark, and were all previously available on-line.
The images were uploaded to Flickr, a popular photo sharing site.

The images were loaded into 262 contact sheets and formatted with a cover for printing as an e-book. The book is available for free download or a printed copy may be ordered.

Similar Diversity is an information graphic which opens up a new
perspective at the topics religion and faith by visualizing the Holy
Books of five world religions. Communalities and differences of
Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and Judaism are shown up in
this datavisualization.

The visual's basis is an objective text analysis of the Holy
Scriptures, and works without any interpretations from the creators'
side. Despite - or even because of this abstraction, the artworks are
not only working on an informal but also on an emotional level. The
viewers should be inspired to think about own prejudices and current
religious conflicts.
